With 3x 1/3" 800k progressive scan CCDs, the broadcast quality XL2 is the flagship of the Canon range, setting the standard in versatile, light-weight professional digital video. Revolutionising its class, the XL2 provides full manual control over a myriad of variables, allowing all the fine adjustments necessary to satisfy even the most demanding professional videographer.
Both 16:9 (960 x 576 effective pixels) and 4:3 (720 x 576 effective pixels) formats are supported. A 3rd generation signal processing LSI delivers outstanding Signal/Noise ratio performance, with high sensibility and low smear.

Cine feel
Film-like texture, tone and expression are now routine, with 25p recording and a special Cine Look mode. Gamma curve controls include Knee adjustments to tame white clipping and Black controls bring out or suppress detail in the low brightness areas. Colour matrix is selectable from Video and Cinema, while V Detail allows flexible resolution in the vertical direction. Skin Detail allows control over phase and chroma for softer, warmer skin tones. A Film Grain setting adds the warmth and natural compression of film. Manual control is provided over Master RGB, Setup level, Master Pedestal, Gain, Coring, Sharpness, Noise Reduction, Colour Gain and Hue.

Control
Two custom keys instantly recall any chosen manual setting within the 8 main menu functions. Favourite settings can be saved to three custom presets. Independent control is provided over R Gain, G Gain and B Gain. White balance can be set to true white or adjusted manually.

Lens
Fluorite and aspheric elements in the 20x zoom lens eliminate both chromatic and spherical aberrations. A circular iris provides beautiful background blur and built-in neutral density (ND) filters allow the iris to open fully in harsh light conditions. The XL mount system is compatible with all XL video lenses, and over 60 Canon EF lenses via an optional adapter.

Go steady
Optical image stabilization (OIS) eliminates unwanted camera shake before the image reaches the sensor. SuperRange OIS extends IS by examining the image after it is received by the sensor and suppressing low frequency movements.

In sync
Both Rec Run and Free Run SMPTE time code is supported. 2 built-in phantom powered XLR jacks and a BNC jack for monitor output is provided. An IEEE1394 connection allows direct hard disk recording. Improved CCD'S
Canon's new camera boasts new 1/3" 800K pixel CCD's (XL1S 260K) that produce 540 lines of horizontal resolution and features a new 3rd generation camera signal processing LSI which improves s/n ratio from XL1S - this realises higher resolution, higher sensitivity and lower smear.

16:9 Mode
The camera also features a new high resolution 16:9 mode that exceeds the electronic enlargement method of the XL1S. The XL2 16:9 mode outperforms the XL1S 4:3 mode in quality with a higher pixel count by 2.5x. 20x Zoom Lens
The 16x lens of the XL1S has been superceeded by a new 20x fluorite news with VAP stabiliser and a precision circular iris. The lens features two ND filters as well as a zoom preset switch, allowing the lens to memorise zoom and focus positions. SMPTE Timecode
The XL2 features both Record Run (Counter runs during recording, continuous timecode is recorded to tape) and Free Run (Counter runs regardless of power on/off and record pause) SMPTE timecode. Users can reset timecode at zero or preset the counter at the users choice. XLR Inputs / Audio
The XL2 has integral XLR audio inputs which supply 48V phantom power, channel 3 and 4 are accessible by utilising the MA300 XLR adapter which mounts on the cameras smart accessory shoe. The camera comes supplied with a high performance stereo microphone as standard. The headphone jack has been refined and now is a metal connector as opposed to the plastic type found on the XL1S. Cine Look / Camera Settings
New to the XL2 is a 25P cine look as well as wide control of picture adjustment.

Gamma: You can choose the gamma mode from Video (normal) and Cinema, when you choose Cinema you film like texture and tone.
Knee: To prevent white clipping of high intensity subjects you can adjust the dynamic range (high, medimu and low).
Black: You can adjust the dynamic range of the low brightness side: Stretch, the tone of the black is expressed by expanding the dynamic range of low brightness area. Press, the tone is controlled by narrowing the dynamic range.
Colour Matrix: The colour can be set whilst shooting for Video and Cinema - which expresses film colouring.
V Detail: the resolution can be set in vertical direction, options are normal and low.
Skin Detail: By adjusting hue, Chroma and Y level you can detect the part of skin colour and soften the image.
Film Grain: Offers a filmic grain effect.
R/G/B Gain: Enables slight adjustment to images.
Coring: Reduces noise in pictures.
Master Pedestal: Adjusts the master pedestal of black allowing control of contrast in dark images.
NR: Noise Reduction: Auto/Low/Middle/High/Off
Colour Hue: Hue can be adjusted to red or green.
Sharpness: Resolution can be adjusted from sharper to softer.
Colour Grain: Colour depth can be adjusted.
Set-Up Level: Dynamic range can be adjsuted. Custom Keys
The XL2 has two custom keys which may be set to: timecode, index recording, zebra pattern, vcr stop, onscreen, handle zoom speed, level meter. Or in VCR mode timecode, onscreen, datacode and level meter. Viewfinder / LCD Screen
The XL2 features a new 200K pixel 2" LCD/Viewfinder which is adjustable left, right, fore and aft. The viewfinder now displays 16:9 as letterbox (XL1S 16:9 image is stretched). Record, shutter and gain LED's are now located in the viewfinder as are audio levels. A centre cross shaped marker can be turned on and off of the screen. Information displayed in the EVF can be turned on/partly on and off, the colour may also be adjusted. Zebra / Clearscan / White Balance / Gain
Zebra can be set to 100, 95, 90, 85 and 80%. White balance can be set at auto, tungsten and daylight as well as having three manual presets. Gain can be controlled from -3dB to +18dB. As found on the XL1S the XL2 also has clearscan allowing the filming of screens and removing the flicker. Interval Recording
Interval recording is possible with 16 combinations to choose from, 4 intervals of 30sec, 1min, 5min and 10min can be combined with recording times of 0.5sec, 1sec, 1.5sec and 2 sec. The XL2 can also record burnt in time and date which can be useful for observation purposes. Shutter Speed / Exposure
Shutter speed can be set in 20 steps from a slow shutter of 1/6 second to 1/16000 of a second. An exposure lock button allows the exposure to be fixed, shutter speed and aperture can be set after exposure has been locked. Index Marking / Searching
An index signal can be recorded on to tape whilst shooting. An index search may then be performed once the signal is recorded.
