Canon EOS-C300 PL, EOS C300 PL super 35mm Full HD cinematography camcorder with PL lens mount
Introducing the new Canon Cinema EOS C300 (Canon EF Lens Mount) and Cinema EOS C300 PL (Arri PL lens mount) - Canon's first Digital Cinema camcorders.
This new Full HD camcorder has the form factor of a supersized DSLR, however it is clearly aimed solely at digital cinematography, with a total absence of still image capture as well as AF and AE functionality. This means that even when using a Canon EF lens on the C300 EF you won't get the benefit of the lens' auto focus capabilities!
Contrary to expectation the C300 is a Full HD 1080p camcorder rather than being a 4K device even though its CMOS sensor is actually natively 4K resolution (This pitches it head to head with the Sony ).
Rather than the moire-pattern inducing line skipping method employed in the EOS 5D Mark II, the C300 uses a far more video-friendly down-sampling method whereby a group of 4 pixels are sampled and then mapped to each final output pixel.
Interestingly, where the Sony F3L's S-Log option offers the ability to obtain dual-link 4:4:4 output for the ultimate in recording quality, the C300 has built in log capability but only provides a single 10-bit 4:2:2 output via a single HD-SDI connector.

New Canon Super 35mm CMOS Sensor
Modeled on the Super 35mm 3-perf motion picture film standard, the Canon CMOS sensor has an active image size of 24.4 x 13.5mm. It uses 3840 (H) x 2160 (V) photosites to perform the crucial optoelectronic transformation of digital imaging. Each photosite is a generous 6.4 x 6.4 micrometers in area and each has a microlens that ensures the highest efficiency in light transfer to the individual photodiode. Proprietary technologies within the photosite simultaneously lower the image sensor noise floor while enhancing the photon capacity of the photodiode - a combination that assures superb dynamic range. The image sensor employs an innovative readout technique that delivers full bandwidth individual RGB video components without the need for any debayering algorithms.
