To ensure ARRI’s renowned rugged build quality in a compact, lightweight camera, the ALEXA Mini incorporates several innovative design solutions. These include highly integrated, environmentally sealed electronics, a durable carbon fiber body, and a robust titanium PL mount. The titanium mount connects directly to the internal sensor mount, ensuring a stable flange focal distance even when using larger lenses. Compact, versatile, and easy to carry, the ALEXA Mini is designed to be transported in backpacks or as carry-on luggage, making it a go-anywhere tool for filmmakers.
The ALEXA Mini offers multiple operation modes, including wireless remote control, standard use with the ARRI MVF-1 multi-viewfinder, or via an on-board monitor with control through the user button interface on the camera body. Its light weight makes it easy to operate handheld at arm’s length with a hand rig, while its compact size and quiet operation are ideal for tight shooting environments. The symmetrical design supports filming in any orientation, including upside-down or in portrait mode, with numerous accessory points for creative mounting options. Additionally, the interchangeable lens mount can be swapped for any designed for the ARRI AMIRA, allowing the use of B4 video lenses and EF mount still photography lenses.
Equipped with a 4:3 sensor and automatic de-squeeze mode for anamorphic shooting, the ALEXA Mini supports frame rates from 0.75 to 200 fps. It records ProRes or uncompressed ARRIRAW internally to CFast 2.0 cards or externally to a Codex recorder, which can capture image streams from up to four ALEXA Minis simultaneously—an excellent solution for multi-camera setups like 360° plates. The ALEXA Mini’s images seamlessly match those from other ALEXA cameras, simplifying color grading and streamlining the post-production workflow.
The ALEXA Mini is designed for efficiency and integration. A built-in lens motor controller connects directly to the titanium PL mount, enabling the use of active lens motors. ARRI’s Lens Data System (LDS) provides frame-accurate metadata, helping to save time and costs both during production and in post. With built-in Wi-Fi, camera functions—such as the motorized internal ND filters—can be remotely controlled via iOS or Android devices, allowing quick responses to changing lighting conditions without adding bulk to the camera setup.
Optimized for new-generation brushless gimbals, multicopters, and other specialized rigs, the ALEXA Mini is compact enough to accommodate standard PL mount lenses, even on lightweight or space-constrained systems like gyro-stabilized aerial setups. Its exceptional low-light performance makes it ideal for underwater cinematography, with dedicated housings being developed by leading manufacturers.
Like the ARRI AMIRA, the ALEXA Mini records 4K UHD ProRes, supporting real-time 4K UHD output and simplifying high-resolution workflows. Most importantly, the ALEXA Mini, along with other ARRI cameras using the ALEV III sensor, delivers superior image quality, prioritizing not just spatial resolution but also parameters such as color accuracy, skin tones, and High Dynamic Range (HDR). Whether filming in HD, 2K, 4K UHD, or using native resolutions like uncompressed ARRIRAW 2.8K or ProRes 3.2K, footage captured with the ALEXA Mini remains future-proof, ready to meet evolving industry standards.
