Extend Your Camera’s Capabilities with Atomos Shogun & Ninja Assassin

Atomos is well known for innovation; its founders, Jeromy Young and Ian Overliese, have their roots in tech companies such as Blackmagic Design and Canopus Japan, so it should be no wonder that their current brand is leading the way with all kinds of new and creative video technology solutions.

Functionality is at the heart of everything Atomos create and this is no more evident than when you look at their history of producing easy to use, cutting edge products that enable faster, higher quality and more affordable video production.

Two of their latest products – the Atomos Shogun and Atomos Ninja Assassin – sum the above statement up more than any other products. This newest batch of their functional tech merges recording, monitoring, playback and editing into easy-to-use touchscreen devices that aim to tackle real-world industry problems head on.

Atomos Shogun

Atomos Shogun

Compatible with almost all 4K cameras with a clean HDMI out, (such as the Sony A7s, Panasonic GH4 and Samsung NX1) the Atomos Shogun is the perfect new addition to your camera arsenal.

Record direct from your camera sensor to a range of formats in 10-bit 422 quality with the option to record up to 4K 30p and HD 120p over HDMI or 12/6/3/1.5G SDI. You can also take full advantage of multistep scheduled time lapse recording and pre-roll recording so you never miss a shot! There is also anamorphic de-squeeze monitoring to allow for those using 2x, 1.5x, 1.33x and even Panasonic 8:3 anamorphic solutions.

Once you’ve got a shot, review it instantly or watch it in real-time on the touchscreen device, essentially giving you a director’s monitor wherever you go! Read the full spec and further details here.

Atomos Ninja Assassin

Atomos Ninja Assassin

For those currently using the Atomos Ninja camera, the Ninja Assassin is here to upgrade you to the realm of 4K UHD and 1080 60p shooting! Similarly to the Shogun, this handy bit of kit brings together recording, playback, monitoring and editing into one convenient touchscreen accessory for your current DSLR, Mirrorless or HDMI camera.

The Ninja Assassin records pristine footage directly from your camera’s sensor to virtually lossless Hollywood quality Apple ProRes or Avid DNxHR codecs while also allowing up to eight channels of audio (which can then be mixed via HDMI or analogue).

Using the Ninja Assassin lets the user bypass the camera’s highly compressed internal MPEG compression, therefore boosting the colour accuracy and resolution to up to 1 billion colours!

Like the Shogun, the device lets you go back in time with pre-roll cache recording (up to 8 seconds HD or 2-3 seconds 4K) meaning you’ll never miss a shot again. There are also up to 10 different time-lapse sequences with start and end times over 24 hours.
