How To Clean & Maintain Your Tripod
If you’re using tripods out in the elements, they will always end up getting dirty or clogged up at some point. While this is not ideal, it doesn’t have to be a nightmare.
By simply caring for and maintaining your tripods you can help to prolong their lifespan and keep them working at the best of their ability for years to come, therefore helping you to get more for the money you originally invested in your kit!
Some of the worst conditions for tripods are salt water and sand – so if you’re shooting on a beach any time soon, then listen up – but even just shooting in an innocent, rolling field will start to build up dirt on your prized tripod. Mud and grit, especially, when caught up in the thread and the workings of a tripod, can be a bit of a nuisance.
So, if gritty tripods are ruining your working life, here’s what we would suggest:
Before you begin – It is crucial when taking apart nay tripod to remember what order parts go in. You will need to reassemble them in the same order. Take plenty of photographs as you go to look back on.
- To begin, unscrew the lower legs of your tripod and retract the pole from inside the leg.
- With a damp cloth, wipe down the entire leg which you have just taken out.
- Then, using an old toothbrush and some water with a tiny pinch of washing up liquid, scrub the leg and threaded areas to get rid of any salt, dirt or grit.
- Repeat the above steps for each section of leg on your tripod.
- With all parts removed and cleaned, rinse with clean water and lay out to dry.
- Once dry, apply a small amount of marine grease or a similar lubricant to the threaded areas of the legs to ensure they work smoothly.
- Using the photographs you took of each step as a reference, reconstruct your tripod and enjoy it in fine working order!Browse the full selection of new tripods and used tripods online at DigiBroadcast!
